The Campaign

My IIT is very green, infact I believe it is a forest in some ways ! So what is this campaign all about?

The aim of the Green IIT Initiative is to make all IIT s socially responsible and learning organizations for the pursuit of campus sustainability. The term 'green' is open to misinterpretation, specially when thought of in terms of Green house gas (GHG) emissions. A sustainable campus approach includes building maintenance and upgrades, building construction and design, behavioral change, changes in procurement practices, more use of renewable energy, staff training, waste reduction, ongoing environmental education, recycling and more.

Hmm I get it. But we are a developing nation, we cannot afford such luxuries!

Contrary to popular belief , a "green" and sustainable campus is more economic . It just needs a long term perspective to see the economic sense. Approximately, the electricity consumption of an IIT campus is 4000- 6000 kW per month. , and it is growing at a rate of 15% per year. This implies an yearly electricity budget of Rs 3 to 4 crores for each IIT! Assuming the same rate of growth, and the increase in electricity prices equal to inflation rate(5 %) , the annual electricity budget (for all IITs) will swell up to Rs 180 to 200 crores in the next 10 years!

I am convinced. What can I do to help the cause?

As an IIT Alumni/student, you are a big (future) decision maker. Make environmentally friendly decisions at workplace and home/hostels. Also, visit our how can I help section.
